Tried Varifocals and Gave Up?

It usually wasn't you. It was how they were measured and designed.

The on, off, on, off problem

Many people over 40 spend their day taking their glasses off to read, putting them back on for the room, and peering over the top at their screen. Some tried varifocals once, felt seasick or couldn't find the screen, and went back to what they knew.

Why varifocals fail

  • Measurements were rushed. A millimetre out in height or centring can make the reading or screen zone hard to find.
  • Each eye wasn't measured separately. Faces and eyes aren't symmetrical. If one eye works harder than the other, measuring both as equal is a basic error.
  • The lens didn't match the day. A standard varifocal has a narrow middle zone. If your day is screens, that is the zone you need most.
  • Nobody asked how you work. Stacked monitors, two screens side by side and a laptop on the train each need a different design.

How I do it differently

I do everything myself: the eye test, the measurements, the lens design, the frame choice and the fitting. I take an hour, measure each eye on its own, and ask exactly how your desk, screens and day are set up.

Often the answer is more than one pair: a varifocal for everyday life and an office lens designed for your screens. Same prescription, different jobs.

A client's story

James, 44, had a minus four prescription and had given up on varifocals after a high street pair he "couldn't see out of". I measured him eye by eye and prescribed three pairs: varifocals for everyday, an office lens for his stacked screens at work, and a wider-field design for his two side-by-side monitors at home. He chose frames from Lunor, Salt and LA Eyeworks.

Questions clients ask

How long does it take to adapt? Most people settle straight away or within a week or two. Well-measured lenses designed for your day make that much easier. If something isn't right, I adjust it.

Do I need more than one pair? Not always. If you spend long hours at screens, a dedicated office pair often makes the biggest difference to comfort.
