Blephex - Healthy Lids for life
Our eye health professional can give your eyelids an Advanced Exfoliation for clean, clear, comfortable eyes.
The Blephex procedure may be suitable for you if you:
- Have red, itchy or uncomfortable eyes
- Wear contact lenses
- Are prone to dry or watery eyes
- Are considering eye surgery
- Suffer with Blepharitis or Meibomian Gland Dysfuntion.
The Blephex instrument was designed by an Ophthalmologist to reduce lid inflammation, bacteria and debris built up on eyelid margins. A highly absorbent disposable micro-sponge is soaked in ocusoft plus then spun along the eyelids; for optimal cleaning and exfoliating a fresh clean one is used for each individual eyelid. The lids are cleaned both posterior and anterior, then rinsed well afterwards.
The procedure lasts about 10 minutes and is well tolerated. Most patients simply report a tickling sensation. A numbing drop can be placed in each eye prior to treatment for increased comfort.
Any patients with an insufficient tear film may be prone to a build-up of bio film along the eyelids. Debris on the ocular surface is not being cleaned away by the tear, as the lids blink across the surface they pick up the debris, this eventually builds into a bio-film covering the meibomian gland heads. The bio-film can harbour bacteria and demodex, causing inflammation and further reducing the flow of oils. If left blocked for a prolonged period, then atrophy can leave the meibomian glands ineffective. Hence, an effective way to remove this bio-film is essential, conventional lid wipes are not the solution.
This bio-film covering the posterior lid margin is more likely to be prevalent in the following patients:
MGD patients
Dry Eye sufferers
Contact lens wearers
Blepharitis patients
All of the above would be suitable for a Blephex treatment, followed with a lid hygiene care plan, including heat therapy and ocusoft plus to keep the lids clear of bio-film build up and bacteria for as long as possible. For many patients Omega Eye, a high quality therapeutic level of omega 3 is essential to keep inflammation down on lid margins and enhance the production capabilities of the Meibomian Glands.
